About the Church

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Vilnius, better known as the Franciscan Church, is one of the oldest and most impressive sacred buildings in the capital. It stands in the Old Town of Vilnius and belongs to the Franciscan order. Mass is celebrated here in both Lithuanian and Polish, and in the churchyard stands the Suzin chapel-mausoleum.

The building history of this church goes back to the 14th century. It was originally purely Gothic, but in the 18th century elements of Baroque architecture were added. This produced a unique example of a synthesis of Gothic and Baroque that today delights lovers of architecture and tourists alike.

In 1812, during the Napoleonic Wars, the church was badly damaged and turned into a grain store. It later became an archive, and was only returned to the Franciscans at the beginning of the 20th century. During the Soviet era the church was used as an archive of the Ministry of the Interior of the Lithuanian SSR.

After Lithuania regained independence, the church was returned to the faithful on 5 July 1998. It has been restored and cared for ever since. One of the recent restoration projects was the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary (the White Mother of God), regarded as miraculous, which has now been uncovered and made accessible to visitors and the faithful.

In 2013 the Supreme Court of Lithuania issued a ruling by which the monastery buildings next to the church were returned to the state. Later, in 2017, these buildings were handed over to the Conventual Franciscan order. This decision provoked considerable discussion and criticism, as it was argued that the buildings had been returned not to a Lithuanian order but to one operating in Poland, which had only acquired ownership of them in 1938, during the period of actual Polish occupation.

The church's interior is also worth attention. Here one can find the impressive Franciscan triptych in the right-hand nave. The monastery's inner courtyard is likewise a special place, where a deep peace and the spirit of history can be felt.

The Franciscan Church in Vilnius is not only an important religious centre but also a living witness of history, its walls preserving echoes of many eras and political upheavals. Its architecture and unique history make it one of the most fascinating jewels of Vilnius Old Town.
