About the Church
The Church of St John Paul II in Vilnius is a young capital-city parish, active in the rapidly growing Pašilaičiai microdistrict. The parish was established on 13 June 2018 by the Archbishop of Vilnius, Gintaras Grušas, thereby commemorating Pope St John Paul II's visit to Lithuania in 1993.
Until a permanent house of prayer is built, the community gathers in the chapel of the Pašilaičiai branch of the Catholic St Joseph's School (Medeinos g. 14). The chapel, designed for weekday services, holds about 30 people, while Sunday Mass is celebrated in the school's more spacious hall. Services are held in both Lithuanian and Polish.
A church dedicated to St John Paul II, with a pastoral care centre, is planned for Pašilaičiai. In 2018, Pope Francis blessed the cornerstone of the future church, brought from the Pope's birthplace – Wadowice in Poland.
