Vilniaus (Kalvarijų) Šv. Kryžiaus Atradimo bažnyčia

The Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross (Kalvarijos) in Vilnius is a distinctive sacred place, where historical events, architectural beauty and spiritual ritual intertwine. Standing in the Jeruzalė district of Vilnius, the church rises on the right bank of the Neris river and belongs to the territory of Verkiai Regional Park. This Baroque shrine, through its history and architecture, draws both local residents and tourists.

The church's history goes back to the start of the 17th century, when in 1662 Jurgis Bialozoras, Bishop of Vilnius, was granted seven valakai of land from the Verkiai manor. This was intended to commemorate the liberation of Vilnius from the lands occupied by the Muscovite state in 1655–1661. In 1669 the first wooden church and a monastery were built here, home to the Dominicans. In later years, in 1701, the parish of Verkiai was founded, which became an important spiritual centre.

The present masonry church was built in the middle of the 18th century with the help of Mykolas Petrauskas and Kristina Petrausčiėnė. It is thought that its design was created by the renowned architect Johann Christoph Glaubitz. At the end of the 18th century 35 Stations of the Cross were also set up beside the church: 19 masonry chapels, 7 wooden and 1 masonry gate were built, along with a bridge over the Cedronas stream.

Although during the wars of 1812 the French destroyed a large part of the monastery and the church was damaged, it was rebuilt. In the middle of the 19th century the monastery was closed, and a presbytery was set up in its building. But even after such hardships the church did not cease to function as an important religious site.

In 1867 the Governor of Vilnius attempted to propose demolishing the Kalvarijos chapels, but they remained standing until the second half of the 20th century. Unfortunately, during the Soviet period, especially after the Second World War, many of the chapels were destroyed or blown up. Only in 1990 did restoration work begin, to a design by Brigita Radavičiūtė.

Today the Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross in Kalvarijos is fully restored and functions as a parish church. Its facade was repaired in 1969 and 1983, and the entire structure was reconstructed in 2006. Mass in the church is celebrated in Lithuanian and Polish, so it is open to all the faithful regardless of nationality or language.
