About the Church

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Vilnius is one of the most interesting architectural and religious monuments of Vilnius, standing in Žvėrynas — one of the oldest and most charming districts of the city. With its history and architecture, this church attracts both local residents and tourists.

Requests for the church's construction go back to the beginning of the 20th century, when in 1907 a design for a new masonry church was prepared by the engineer Vaclovas Michnevičius. The design was approved in 1909, and construction work began as early as 1911, overseen by J. Adamavičius, the parish priest of St Raphael's Church. However, the First World War halted construction, which resumed only after the war.

The parish was established in 1922, and its first parish priest was Anicetas Butkevičius. Although the church was not fully completed, services began to be held there in 1925, but the towers were never built up in masonry. Until 1940 no services were held in Lithuanian, and in 1942 around 2,800 Lithuanians were recorded in the parish. After the Second World War the church was repaired, and in 1956 it was consecrated by Bishop Julijonas Steponavičius. Later, from 1970 to 1990, Stasys Lidys, who administered the parish, contributed to the decoration of the church and its surroundings.

It is interesting that Marian Fathers also worked in this church, among them St. Puidokas MIC, T. Miliauskas MIC, V. Aliulis MIC, P. Vaitonis MIC and P. Chudzik MIC. At present several priests serve at the church, among them the parish priest V. Rapalis, Fr V. V. Kudriasov, Fr R. L. Liutkevičius and Fr R. A. Volskis.

Architecturally, the church is an excellent combination of Historicism, Romanesque Revival. It has a rectangular plan, no tower, and three naves, and its facades are adorned with statues of saints, giving the building a particular solemnity. Although the church has no towers, its architectural forms and details reflect the stylistic trends of the period.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is not only a centre of spiritual life but also an important monument of Vilnius's culture and history. Every visit here lets one feel the spirit of the past and understand what an important role this church played in the Vilnius community throughout the 20th century.
