About the Church
The Church of St John the Baptist at Bebrene is a Roman Catholic church standing in the centre of the small town of Bebrene, in Augšdaugava Municipality, in the historic region of Selonia north of the Daugava. It belongs to the Diocese of Jelgava.
The first wooden church at Bebrene was built in 1652 and for a long time functioned as a filial church of Ilūkste; an independent parish at Bebrene was established in 1783. After the old church burned down, the present masonry church was raised in 1797, and at the end of the 19th century a bell tower was added to it.
It is a spacious masonry church, its decoration and proportions typical of 18th–19th-century sacred architecture. It remains an important centre of spiritual life for the Bebrene community, where services are held regularly.
