About the Church
The Church of St Peter and St Paul the Apostles in Vilūnai is a fine example of history and architecture, located in the small village of Vilūnai. This church not only has an interesting and rich past, but is also associated with various religious changes and reflections of historical events.
The church's history begins in 1810, when Tadas Orvidas built a Uniate stone-masonry church. At that time the Uniates were Eastern-rite Catholics, but the life of their community soon began to be restricted by the authorities of the Russian Empire. In 1822 the Russian authorities forbade the Uniate clergyman from living in Vilūnai, because right nearby, in Kruonis, there was an Orthodox church. This decision was part of a larger plan aimed at strengthening the Orthodox faith in the region and reducing the influence of other religious groups.
In 1839, after the church union was abolished, the church in Vilūnai was handed over to the Orthodox, who established a church here. This situation continued right up to 1922, when the church was finally given back to the Catholics. This was an important moment for the local community, which could once again practise their faith in this sacred building.
In 1923, thanks to the efforts of the first parish priest Juozapas Pužyckis, the parish was established. Parish priest Pužyckis managed to convert the former Orthodox church into a Catholic church and to build a wooden sacristy. Later, in 1960, on the initiative of Father Ignas Milašius, a stone-masonry sacristy was added to both sides of the church. These additions and alterations helped to create the appearance we see today.
Architecturally, the church in Vilūnai is an example of subtle beauty and simplicity. It has a rectangular plan with a small turret on the roof, and the churchyard is enclosed by a wooden-post fence. This fence gives the whole complex the cosy, traditional appearance of a village church. In the middle of the churchyard stands a wooden cross – a symbolic place for prayer and reflection.
