About the Church
The Church of St John the Baptist in Butkiškė is a remarkable gem of Lithuanian culture and architecture, situated in the village of Butkiškė on the right bank of the River Dubysa. The church has a long and rich history, full of interesting events and significant moments.
The first church on this site was built as early as 1506. This was a period when Lithuania, having formed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth together with Poland, experienced both internal growth and external threats. In 1539, thanks to the generosity of the Ariogala tijūnija, the church was granted as much as 19 valakai of land and a parish priest was appointed, who is also recorded in 1567. This shows that even then this sacred building was important to the local community.
In 1613 the church of Butkiškė became a filial church of the Ariogala parish, but by 1636 it is again recorded as an independent parish. In the 19th century the church flourished — in 1820 it served not only Butkiškė but also the village of Skubai. As the years passed the situation changed, however, and in 1853 a parish school operated here, giving local children the chance of an education.
One of the more notable historical moments concerned the curate Aleksandras Balčiauskas, who took part in the uprising and later withdrew to Lithuania Minor. This shows how the church and its clergy actively took part in public life and even in political events.
The church's architecture is unique and reflects the traditions of vernacular architecture. The building has a rectangular plan, is towerless, and a two-tier wooden bell tower stands in the churchyard. The church's fence is also distinctive — built of stone masonry, it lends the whole complex extra authenticity and charm. In 1938–1939, under the care of the parish priest Pranas Bikinas, the church underwent a major renovation, which has helped preserve this cultural heritage site to this day.
By a decree of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Kaunas, Sigitas Tamkevičius, in 2003, several settlements were assigned to the parish of St John the Baptist in Butkiškė, such as Aleksandrovka, Antvėjai, Baukiai, Čiužiūnai, Daugėliškiai and others, which today contribute to the vitality of the parish and the strengthening of the community.
