About the Church
The Church of Divine Providence in Lesčiai is a special place, situated in the village of Lesčiai, near the old Samogitian highway. This small wooden church, built as early as 1789 on the initiative of Kotryna Remerienė and Jonas Remeris, is a fine example of vernacular architecture.
The church was created not only as a house of prayer but also as a cultural centre for the community. From the outset it served as a filial church of the Ariogala parish. Interestingly, as early as 1826 a parish school and an altaria operated here, endowed with a large orchard. During the interwar period, when Lithuania had regained its independence, all non-Latin services in the church were held in Lithuanian, thereby encouraging and sustaining national identity. An almshouse was also opened, housing a school, a post office agency and a shop, and local residents could enjoy the entertainment and plays staged there.
A great contribution to the life of this church was made by the priest Juozas Underys, who served as parish priest of Lesčiai for more than 30 years. After his death in 1953 the parish was taken over by another important figure — the priest Antanas Ylius, a deportee to Siberia. Under his care the church was thoroughly renovated: the walls were clad with boards, a new roof was laid, pews were installed inside, and the bell tower, whose bell calls the faithful to services, was likewise renovated.
Architecturally, the Church of Divine Providence in Lesčiai is simply wonderful. It stands on a hill, some way from the centre of the settlement, as if offering every visitor a moment of peace and contemplation. The church has a rectangular plan, with a narrow apse, a side sacristy and a small turret on the ridge of the roof. The churchyard is enclosed by a low masonry wall, while the wooden bell tower and the old cemetery lend the place a special charm and a sense of history.
Nor should we forget the cultural activities that took place at this church. During the interwar period the organists Adomaitis and Juozas Rimkus formed a church choir, and a Pavasarininkai youth group helped organise activities for the local young people.
