About the Church
The Church of St Joseph in Vosiliškis, located in the village of Vosiliškis, Raseiniai district, is a genuine gem of vernacular architecture, its history full of interesting events and figures. Built in 1812, this wooden church stands by the road linking Raseiniai and Baisogala. This was a particularly difficult period for Lithuania, but the Vosiliškis community managed to preserve and nurture its cultural and religious traditions.
The church's beginnings go back to the 18th century. Around 1712 the Belozaras family built a chapel at Belazariškis manor. History records that in 1785 Juozapas Belozaras built the first wooden church on this site and donated land to it. Later, at the beginning of the 19th century, a parish school operated here, showing that the church was not only a place of prayer but also a centre of education.
The new church was built in 1812, some distance from Belazariškis manor. This wooden church, distinguished by its vernacular architectural forms, has a rectangular plan and a narrow five-sided apse. Its silhouette is marked by two small towers at the ends of the ridge. The single-nave church has one altar, giving the whole interior a sense of intimacy and simplicity.
Over the years the church has had to withstand quite a few challenges. During the 1863 uprising, the Vosiliškis parish priest Juozapas Limontas was exiled to Perm Governorate, where he died in 1866. But even under such difficult conditions the community managed to keep its house of prayer. In 1882 the church was renovated and enlarged, and in 1929 a parish was established here.
The church's architecture is a fine example of Lithuanian vernacular architecture. It radiates the simplicity and authenticity characteristic of Lithuanian village churches of that period. On the main facade there are small turrets, which give the church a sense of grace and sanctity. Inside one can find an organ loft, which enriched the church's musical life, and the cross on the bell tower recalls the strength of the Christian faith.
