About the Church
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Vidiškiai is an architectural gem rising in the small town of Vidiškiai, Ukmergė district. This Neoclassical shrine is special not only for its beauty but also for a history spanning several centuries.
The church's history begins as early as 1562, when Jurgis Vidiškis donated 300 grašiai to the local filial church. About a hundred years later, in 1664, a new wooden church was built. In the late 18th century a parish school operated here, fostering the spiritual and intellectual abilities of the younger generation. Unfortunately, by 1840 this church had burned down, and a temporary wooden one without a floor was put up in its place.
The owner of Šventupys and Vidiškiai, Anupras Koska, set about building a masonry church in 1844. However, for lack of funds the work was halted in 1849. It was only thanks to Bishop Motiejus Valančius that construction resumed in 1851, and just two years later, in 1853, the church was completed. The church's importance is also attested by the fact that a parish was established in 1856.
Architecturally, the Church of the Holy Trinity in Vidiškiai is a true example of Neoclassicism. It has a shallow roof and a small turret; inside are three aisles of equal height with flat wooden ceilings. The churchyard is enclosed by a masonry wall and contains a low masonry bell tower and two crosses. One commemorates the jubilee of Lithuania's Christianisation, and the other commemorates the Grand Duke Casimir. The latter cross was erected by Kazimieras Linkevičius, who was born in Vidiškiai but lives in Florida, USA, together with his wife Mėta.
