About the Church
The Church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, in Kolka stands in the settlement of Kolka, by Cape Kolka, where the Baltic Sea meets the Gulf of Riga. It is also known as the fishermen's church.
The Catholic community of Kolka came together in 1992. In 1997, with the permission of the Diocese of Liepāja, a small wooden log church, built in 1935, was moved to Kolka from Grīņi, in Saka; it was renovated, a tower was added (architect Marija Zēberga), and that same year Bishop Ārvalds Andrejs Brumanis consecrated it in honour of Our Lady, Star of the Sea.
It is a small wooden log church with a wooden altar and a grotto of Our Lady, into whose wall is set an anchor donated by a local fisherman — a prayer for all who set out to sea. The main parish feast is celebrated on 22 August.
