About the Church
The Church of St Andrew the Apostle in Roja is a modern-style church in the town of Roja, a fishing settlement on the shore of the Gulf of Riga, in the Talsi municipality, in northern Courland. The church belongs to the Diocese of Liepāja and is dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle, patron of fishermen, which is especially meaningful for a coastal community.
The idea of building the church matured after Latvia regained independence, when the Catholic community gathered together again in Roja. The foundation stone was blessed in 2005, but for lack of funds the work stopped and resumed several times. The church was finally completed and handed over to the faithful in 2019.
The building was designed in a modernist spirit, using contemporary construction technologies, large concrete blocks and plenty of wood. Modest but welcoming, the church has become an important centre of spiritual life for the community of Roja and a gathering place for the faithful of the coastal region.
