About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Talsi stands in the town of Talsi – a picturesque land of hills and lakes in northern Courland. The church belongs to the Liepāja Diocese and is dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Catholic faith was preached in Talsi as early as the 13th century, but the Catholic church disappeared during the Reformation. The community was re-established in the late 19th century, when a local benefactress donated land with a red-brick dwelling house; a house of prayer was fitted out and blessed there in 1899.
During the Soviet era the life of the church was restricted, but in 1998–2005 the church was substantially renovated and extended, and a bell tower was added. Today the Talsi church is the centre of spiritual life for the local Catholic community and the Talsi Deanery.
