About the Church
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Surdegis is a truly special place where historical and spiritual pasts intertwine. It stands in the small town of Surdegis, in Anykščiai district, close to the Troškūnai–Subačius road. This Neo-Baroque masonry building, built in 1812, today stands as a witness to quiet beauty and history.
The church's history goes back to around 1780, when a Catholic chapel was built in Surdegis. Over several decades it grew and changed, but the most significant event came in 1918, when a former Orthodox church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles became a Roman Catholic church. This transformation is clearly reflected in the building's architecture too: in 1920 one tower was removed, the appearance of the other was altered, a new ceiling was installed, the roof was repaired, and the windows were fitted with iron bars.
In 1926, by the Apostolic Constitution of Pope Pius XI, the church of Surdegis was assigned to the Diocese of Panevėžys. Though this might look like an administrative formality, the event was highly significant – the church became an important spiritual centre of attraction for the whole region. Thanks to senior priest Juozapas Gendrėnas, the church was carefully renovated in 1934, and in 1937 a ten-stop organ was installed here, which still graces services today.
It is also interesting that an old well has survived in the church's cellar, which has become a favourite place for pilgrims to visit. It stands as a kind of symbol that the roots of faith lie deep, and spiritual strength rises from the very depths of the earth.
The church of Surdegis is also known for its religious feasts. Among them are Pentecost, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (15 August) and St Barbara (5 December), which draw not only local residents but also people from other parishes.
The list of priests who have served in this church testifies to a long-standing spiritual legacy, passed down from generation to generation. From Matas Nakas to the present administrator, Saulius Filipavičius, each of them has contributed to nurturing the spiritual life of this place.
Architecturally, the church has a rectangular plan, with annexes and one tower, and its churchyard is enclosed by a metal fence with masonry posts. This lends the building solidity along with aesthetic refinement.
