About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Jasmuiža stands in the settlement of Aizkalne, in Preiļi Municipality, Latgale. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
A wooden church once stood on this site, though the date of its construction is unknown. In 1815 the landowner Ksaveras Šadurskis built a new masonry church (originally 24×12 metres). In 1926, through the efforts of the parish priest Ostrovskis, the church was considerably enlarged: side chapels were added, the front was extended, and a small tower rose above it.
The cross-plan masonry church retains the high altar inherited from the earlier building, along with a wooden cross, a painting of St George and two old wooden confessionals. Nearby, at Jasmuiža Manor, the poet Rainis's memorial museum operates.
