About the Church

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord Jesus in Nīdermuiža is a Catholic church of the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona in Latgale. The first wooden Catholic church here was built in 1748 on land granted in 1727 by Augustus II, ruler of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The wooden church was extended in 1875 and renovated in 1892, but burned down in 1898. The present masonry church was built in 1901 through the efforts of the parish priest Juozapas Andžejevskis, with support from parishioners and benefactors from Lithuania and St Petersburg. It is built of split fieldstone and red brick, and has two towers. Inside stands an old wood-carved altar, acquired from a closed church in Lithuania; the parish has seven cemeteries.
