About the Church
The Church of St Anthony of Padua in Pilcene stands in the Dricāni civil parish, Rēzekne municipality, and is considered one of the oldest wooden churches in Latgale. It is protected as an architectural monument of national significance.
It is a single-nave log church with a small hexagonal bell tower, crowned by an onion-shaped dome and a cross; the building is about 21 metres long and 10.5 metres wide. Different sources give its construction date as either 1670 or 1762. Inside there are three altars, and the 18th-century altar painting has the status of a state-protected monument.
In the 1970s the Soviet authorities intended to demolish the church, but this was prevented by the local cultural worker Vladislavs Locis.
