About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross of Rozentova (Malta) stands in the centre of the settlement of Malta, in the Rēzekne region, in Latgale, and belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona. It is an architectural monument of national significance.
The first wooden Catholic chapel stood in the village of Solomenka, a couple of kilometres from Malta. The present wooden church in Rozentova was built in 1780 with funds from the landowner A. Felkerzāms. At first it was very small, so in 1842 it was lengthened by three fathoms (about 6.4 metres), and in 1906 by the same amount again; these extensions are still visible in the ceiling structure.
It is a single-aisled wooden church with one tower, a sheet-metal roof and plank floors, 24 metres long and 9 metres wide. Inside are three altars: the high altar has a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary beneath a large cross, the side altars have a statue of the Mystical Rose and a painting above the altar of the Sacred Heart of Jesus; the church also preserves a painting, "Christ at the Cross and St Mary Magdalene", and old, distinctively made processional litters.
In the churchyard stands a masonry bell tower on a stone foundation with four bells, three of which are in use. The church still serves the Catholic community of Malta and the surrounding area.
