About the Church

The Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rugāji stands in the settlement of Rugāji, in north-eastern Latvia, in the Balvi area, and belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.

In 1938 Fr Pēteris Tumans acquired a plot of 4.5 hectares on which to build a church, but the work was interrupted by the Second World War and Soviet restrictions. The house of prayer was set up in the two-storey presbytery building, where services began to be held in 1941.

The old wooden church has three wooden altars; the central one bears a painting of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and a harmonium stands on the upper floor. In 2011 construction of a new church began, and it was solemnly opened on 14 July 2019. The church serves the local Catholic community.
