About the Church
The Church of St Louis at Bukmuiža (Ezernieki) stands in the village of Ezernieki, in the Krāslava district, in the Latgale region. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
A wooden church founded by Jan Hilzen once stood on the site; it was a filial church of the Dagda church. In 1785 Countess Konstancija Hilzen donated 44 hectares of land to the parish. The present masonry church was built in 1830 at the expense of the landowner Liudvikas Šabanskis, and it was consecrated in the same year in honour of St Louis.
It is a towerless fieldstone masonry church in the Baroque style. Inside are five altars, among them paintings by the artist Aldzimovičius from 1904, and a copy of the miraculous painting of the Mother of God of Šiluva in Lithuania; a stone bell tower stands in the churchyard. The church is protected as an architectural monument of national significance.
