About the Church
The Church of St Maria Goretti in Salacgrīva (Salacgrīvas Svētās Marijas Goreti Romas katoļu baznīca) is a Roman Catholic church in north-western Latvia, in the Vidzeme region, in the town of Salacgrīva on the shore of the Gulf of Riga.
The church was built in 1997 to a design by the architect Dagnis Straubergas, and in July of the same year it was consecrated by Archbishop Jānis Pujāts. The church is dedicated to St Maria Goretti, a young Italian martyr (1890–1902). The high altar is adorned with a cross bearing an image of Christ, made by the sculptor Jānis Bārda, and the interior is further enriched with mosaics.
Small, and built at the end of the 20th century, the church is an important gathering place for the local Catholic community and a centre of spiritual life in this seaside town.
