About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of St Lawrence in Limbaži stands in the town of Limbaži, in northern Vidzeme. Limbaži is an old Hanseatic-era town with a rich medieval history, and this Catholic church is the youngest church in the town.
The church was built in 1996 to a design by the architects Inguna Jēkalė and Dagnis Straubergas; the first Mass and the consecration of the new church took place on 9 June 1996. It was the first Catholic church built in Limbaži in the period of independent Latvia, and one of the newest in the whole of northern Vidzeme.
The church is dedicated to St Lawrence, a deacon and martyr of the early Church. The church houses various works of art and paintings, and services are held in Latvian. This church is an important centre for the Catholic community of Limbaži.
