About the Church
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Joniškis is one of the most impressive monuments of sacred architecture in Lithuania, its history and architecture interweaving a tradition and artistic development spanning several centuries.
The church's history began as early as 1526, when, through the efforts of Jonas, Bishop of Vilnius, the first wooden church was built in the village of Kalnelis. The first parish priest was Morkus Lančkis. These were times when religion played an especially important role in everyday life, and the church became a place where people gathered to pray, take part in community life and seek spiritual comfort.
In 1626 a new masonry church was built on the territory of present-day Joniškis. However, time and decay took their toll on this building — by 1679 only ruins remained of the church, and it had to be restored. Despite this, devotion and faith helped keep the parish alive. Finally, a design prepared and approved in 1897 by the engineer Pyotr Serbinovich became the basis for the present church, whose construction was overseen by the engineer Nikolai Andreyev. Thanks to the efforts of the parish priest Liudvikas Šiaučiūnas, the church was built in 1901.
The church has a distinctive architectural style — Historicism, which is clearly visible both outside and inside. The building has a Latin-cross plan, with a tall tower at the front and a five-sided apse at the centre. The silhouette of the church tower is Baroque, while the front portal is Classicist, decorated with semicircular arches, columns and a triangular pediment.
The interior is no less impressive than the exterior. Bright, contrasting colours dominate here, and the ceiling and walls are adorned with multi-figure traditional compositions created by Kazimieras Valčiukevičius of Šiauliai. Neo-Baroque sculptures of saints set in painted niches, the altars and other decorations lend the church a special grandeur and splendour. The high altar with sculptures by Austrian and French masters, the richly decorated pulpit, and the organ, moved here from the old church of Joniškis, all add to this church's uniqueness and historical value.
It is worth noting that the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Joniškis is not merely a treasury of architecture and art. Since the mid-17th century it has been, and remains, the region's spiritual centre, known for the cult of St Martinian. The church holds not only reliquaries but also his 17th-century image with its metal cover and votive offerings, which still attract many pilgrims and tourists today.
The church even has several chapels under its care, located in various parts of Joniškis district. This shows that the parish has actively served, and continues to serve, a wide region, tending to the spiritual life of its community.
