About the Church
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Klovainiai is a unique and impressive church, adorning the town of Klovainiai near Pakruojis. This wooden church, built in 1854, stands in a beautiful spot on the right bank of the river Daugyvenė.
The church is notable for its vernacular architectural forms, and its simplicity and warmth attract both local residents and visitors. Its rectangular plan with a single tower adds to its aesthetic value. The tower is distinguished by four tapering tiers with a pointed roof, its top adorned with wrought-iron crosses.
This church's history is rich and colourful. The first church in Klovainiai was built as early as 1621 on the initiative of Jeronimas Valavičius. Over the centuries the church underwent many changes. Several decades later, in 1854, the present wooden church was built. Through the efforts of the parish priest Pranas Urbonavičius, the church was repainted and the altars gilded in the early 20th century, giving it even greater grandeur.
During the First World War the Germans took away two of the church's bells, but new ones were acquired in 1925. Great attention was also paid to the upkeep of the church in the interwar period – the parish priest Zenonas Karečka did a great deal of work renovating the church: it was re-roofed, repainted, given a new floor, and its altars and organ were repaired.
The church's interior has three naves, separated by square-section columns with pedestals, which adds to the sense of spaciousness. The ceiling is flat, the floor boarded, and three Neo-Baroque altars give the interior a particular charm. One of the most important contributions to the decoration of the church's interior was made by Jonas Danauskas.
Interestingly, a monument to deportees, erected in 1993, stands in the churchyard, recalling dramatic moments in Lithuanian history. It is also worth noting that the long-serving parish priest of Klovainiai, Jonas Lapinskas, is buried in the churchyard.
The church's organ, installed in 1884 by the master builder Juozapas Radavičius, is also worth attention. It has one manual with pedals and eleven stops. It is worth noting that in 2011 a new organ, "JOHANNUS", received from the Netherlands, was presented and blessed at the church.
