About the Church
In the town of Kvėdarna, in Šilalė district, stands one of the most impressive sacred buildings in Lithuania – the Kvėdarna Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This building, though it has survived more than one fire and rebuilding, is living testimony to the community's strength and steadfast faith.
The first wooden church in Kvėdarna was built as early as 1569, but only a few decades later, in 1593, it burned down. Undeterred by this disaster, the local people did not give up: in 1609 they built a new wooden church, as well as a parish school, which in time became an important centre of education and culture. But history was not merciful – in 1703 a new church had to be built again, and in 1843 everything had to start over once more after another fire.
In the mid-19th century, in 1845, a new masonry church building appeared, which was significantly enlarged in 1902 with the addition of two side chapels. Yet this church too could not escape the flames – it burned down in 1915. While a temporary church stood on the foundations of the former one, the state decided to support the construction of a new, grand church, and in 1936 allocated timber worth 300,000 litas.
Construction began enthusiastically, led by the architect Romanas Steikūnas and the parish priest J. Latvys. Unfortunately, war and chaos did not spare Kvėdarna either – the roof of the new church, only just blessed, burned in 1941. But even then the local community did not give up – in 1943 the unfinished church was put into use, although it remained without towers.
Today the church bears witness to the architectural solutions of various eras and to the devotion of local people. It has three altars, and the churchyard is enclosed by a stone masonry wall. Also buried in this peaceful setting is the long-serving parish priest Alfonsas Klimavičius (1913–1991), who looked after the parish's affairs from 1984.
