About the Church
The Teneniai Church of St Barbara is one of those places that breathe history and charm with their architectural beauty. Standing in the town of Teneniai, next to the Tenenys river, this church has become a spiritual centre of the local community over the centuries.
The church's history began in 1731, when Vaitkevičius built a wooden chapel. It was a modest beginning, but the site soon gained greater significance. By 1774 the chapel is already mentioned as a public place of prayer, and in 1782 Adomas Bilevičius built a fully-fledged church. Just seven years later, in 1789, a plot of land was granted to the church, and a parish was established here.
In 1849 the church was renovated, and somewhat later, in 1889, the cemetery was enclosed with a stone wall. The bell tower standing on the church grounds and the Lourdes grotto are also valuable architectural monuments.
Architecturally, the Teneniai Church of St Barbara is distinctive for its folk architectural forms, in which Baroque features are also interwoven. The cruciform church has a small tower, which lends it a certain elegance and ornateness. The churchyard grounds are enclosed by a stone masonry wall, which gives the site a sense of solidity and history.
Next to the churchyard, where the two-tier wooden bell tower stands, grows the famous Teneniai oak. This tree is an important natural feature, but also a cultural symbol, preserved as a witness to the bond between local nature and people.
