About the Church
The Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in Naujoji Akmenė is the spiritual centre of the youngest town in Akmenė district – the industrial town of Naujoji Akmenė.
Construction of the church began in 1989, during the period of national revival, and by the end of the decade the church had been completed. Construction was led by priest Donatas Stulpinas, and the design was prepared by the architect Rimantas Zimkus. In 1999 three bells were donated by the German priest Gerhardas Langė, who had fought in Lithuania in his youth and later, as a sign of remembrance and apology, donated bells to various Lithuanian churches.
The church is built of white brick, and its composition is formed by two towers – one with a tapering pediment near the main facade, the other, square, with a pyramidal roof. The chancel of the single-nave interior is adorned with abstract stained-glass windows by the artist Olegas Katėnskis, and the altar consists of a table of white polished marble.
