About the Church
The Klykoliai Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in the village of Klykoliai, barely half a kilometre from the border between Lithuania and Latvia. This wooden church is the heart of the faithful in this remote border region.
Sacred life here began in 1778, when the landowner Ignacy Piłsudski built a chapel. A permanent priest was established in 1805, and the chapel was renovated in 1835. The current wooden church was built in 1881 through the efforts of the faithful and the priest A. Gedvilas.
In 1901 the walls were replaced, a small tower was added, a cemetery was laid out and an organ was acquired, and in 1906 Stations of the Cross shrines were erected in the churchyard. The parish was officially established in 1928. The rectangular-plan church with its small tower is surrounded by a stone-masonry churchyard wall.
