About the Church
The Nida Church of Mary, Help of Christians is a distinctive focus of architecture and spiritual community on the Curonian Spit, in the small town of Nida. It is one of the most modern churches in Lithuania and undoubtedly the most striking religious building of this region.
The church's history began in 1994, when the local Catholic community took the initiative to build its own house of prayer. Until then, Nida's Catholics had used the Lutheran church. The Franciscan friars turned to the Neringa municipality, and their request was supported by as many as 713 residents' signatures. A suitable site was sought that would meet both landscape and environmental requirements. After long discussions, it was decided to build the church on a sandy hillock at the junction of Kopų and Taikos streets. The foundation-blessing ceremony took place on 4 May 2000, and the official opening of the church was on 14 June 2003.
Architecturally the church is unique – its design was created by Ričardas Krištapavičius and Algimantas Zaviša. The building blends harmoniously into the Nida landscape, adapted to coastal traditions, while at the same time featuring modern solutions. The wooden structure, reed roof and white openwork cross create a subtle and cosy atmosphere both outside and inside. Through the large windows opens a wonderful view of the Curonian Lagoon, symbolising the human striving to draw closer to God.
Elements beside the altar, such as the cross carved from Juodkrantė stone, and the original glass-and-wood structure above the central doors, further emphasise the sacred space. A bell, cast in Poland, calls people to prayer and comforts them with its sound.
An amphitheatre set up in the church's churchyard allows Christian cultural events to be held in the open air. In the space beneath the church a farewell chapel and a community hall have been fitted out, where various sacred-music concerts and exhibitions of works of art can be organised.
