About the Church

The Vainutas Church of St John the Baptist is a building in the Neo-Baroque style, built in 1869. It stands in the small town of Vainutas, by the road from Šilalė to Šilutė, on the left bank of a right tributary of the Šyša. The church has a two-tower structure and an apse. It serves the Žvingiai Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the chapels of St Roch in Bikavėnai and St Francis of Assisi in Vizbarai. During the Second World War the church suffered damage, but it was later repaired. The churchyard wall is of stone masonry, and in the churchyard there is a Lourdes grotto. Beside the church stands a presbytery, built in 1931.
