About the Church
The Žemaičių Naumiestis Church of St Michael the Archangel stands in Žemaičių Naumiestis, by the road joining Šilalė and Šilutė, and belongs to the Šilutė Deanery of the Diocese of Telšiai.
The present wooden church was built in 1782 through the efforts of Mykolas Ronikeris, and was consecrated in 1790; on its consecration a valakas of land was donated to it. For a long time the churches of St Vincent Ferrer in Degučiai and of Gardamas belonged to it as filial churches. Buried in the churchyard is the long-serving parish priest, later altarist, Petras Bernotas (1910–1988).
The wooden church, with a cross-shaped plan and a small turret, was built in vernacular architectural forms, enriched with elements of the Gothic Revival. Its interior is adorned with five altars, and the churchyard is enclosed by a stone masonry wall.
