About the Church

The Church of St Lawrence at Skriaudžiai stands in the village of Skriaudžiai, about 4.5 km south-west of Veiveriai, in Prienai district. The famous tradition of the Lithuanian kanklės is also linked to this parish.

In 1759 the Pilviškiai elder Mikalojus Chrapovickis built a chapel, and the parish was founded in 1778. In 1802 a new wooden church was erected, but it burned down in 1812. The present masonry church was built in 1829–1834, and was extended and renovated in 1895–1896.

In 1906 the local organist Pranas Puskunigis (1860–1946) founded a kanklės ensemble here, and in 1907 a branch of the "Žiburys" society began operating. The Neo-Baroque church, with Neo-Renaissance features, is of cruciform plan, with two towers, three aisles and cylindrical vaults; it is built of plastered masonry.
