About the Church
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Šilavotas stands in the small town of Šilavotas, about 12 km north-west of Prienai. With its Neo-Gothic features, the church is a striking landmark of the town.
A wooden chapel was built here in 1806, and in 1895 the parish was founded through the efforts of the former Skriaudžiai curate Antanas Radušis. The present masonry church was also built in 1898–1902 by the priest A. Radušis, who worked in Šilavotas for twenty-two years and is buried there. In 1907 a branch of the "Žiburys" society with a library and a reading room was established.
The Historicist church, with Neo-Gothic features, is of rectangular plan, with two towers, three aisles and an apse; it is built of brick. Inside it has an organ by the renowned master craftsman Jonas Garalevičius.
