About the Church
The Church of St Louis at Veiveriai stands in the small town of Veiveriai, in Prienai district. This Neo-Renaissance church recalls a long parish history and its notable pastors.
A chapel was built here in 1782, and in 1818 Juozas Godlevskis built a wooden church that belonged to the Zapyškis parish. The present masonry church was erected in 1853 and was consecrated in 1887 by Bishop Juozapas Holiakas. In 1907 a branch of the "Žiburys" society with a library was established.
In 1934–1935 the church was renovated by the priest Mykolas Krupavičius, who raised the tower and extended and reinforced the building. The priest Juozas Šalčius, who continued the works, was later imprisoned in Karaganda. The Neo-Renaissance church, of rectangular plan and with a single tower and an apse, is built of plastered masonry. The parish also has the Skausmo kalnelio chapel.
