About the Church
Virbalis Church of St Michael the Archangel stands in Virbalis, by the Kybartai–Vilkaviškis road. It was built in 1945. The church has a long history going back to 1554, when the first church was built. At that time it was allotted 6 voloks of land, and a Dominican monastery was later established. By 1783 a new masonry Dominican church had been built, which functioned until 1819. In 1907 a library-reading room and a primary school were established at the church. In 1944 German soldiers blew up the church, but in 1945 a house of prayer was set up in the former almshouse. The church has a rectangular plan, no tower, and a hipped roof. The address is Vilniaus g. 3, and the building material is plastered masonry.
