About the Church
The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Šilėnai is a small but strikingly charming gem of sacred architecture, standing a mere 16 kilometres west of Vilnius, in the village of Šilėnai. The church was built in 1725 and has preserved its authentic vernacular architectural style and spirit.
The history of the village of Šilėnai goes back to the early Middle Ages. Right up until 1500 this land belonged to the Chapter of Vilnius. A wooden church was raised here at the start of the 18th century, and from then on it became an important focal point not only for the local residents but also for pilgrims from the surrounding area.
In 1756 the church was granted property, and later, over the following decades, it was renovated more than once – first in 1855, and again during the Soviet period, in 1962. No less significant an event was the founding of the parish in 1922, which further strengthened the community's bond with the church.
One of the special occasions for which the church is known is the feast of the Holy Trinity and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These feasts traditionally draw many pilgrims and visitors, who gather at the shrine to honour the saints and take part in the solemn services.
Architecturally, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Šilėnai represents folk art. The rectangular-plan building, with two small towers and a narrow, three-sided apse, stands out for its simplicity, yet also for its harmonious beauty. A low sacristy and a single-nave structure with three altars complete this unique composition. The churchyard, enclosed by a stone masonry fence, also contains a cemetery and a Lourdes grotto, which lend the place a particular sense of peace and mystery.
Although services are held only in Polish, this does not diminish the church's significance, either culturally or spiritually. On the contrary, it underlines the rich history and traditions of the local community, preserved to this day.
