About the Church
The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary the Queen in Tilžė is not only a sacred building but a living witness to history, set in the picturesque village of Tilžė in Zarasai district, by the northern shore of Lake Drūkšiai. This wooden church was built in 1928, its construction initiated by the manor owner Chodzko together with the local residents.
The church has the form of a traditional dwelling house – simple, yet charming in its architecture. The rectangular-plan building has a small tower and low side sacristies, which lend it a distinctive character and elegance. The churchyard fence, built of stone masonry, further emphasises the ancient charm and solidity of the place.
Interestingly, services in this church are held only in Polish, reflecting close ties between this territory and Polish culture and history. The church also reflects the cooperation of different peoples and the cultural heritage they have woven together in Lithuania.
In 1929, shortly after the church was built, a parish was established, which became the religious centre of the local community. Since then the church has served as a place of spiritual gathering and community meetings, where people can express their faith and find peace.
