About the Church
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Turmantas is one of the most beautiful and interesting sacred buildings in Zarasai district, standing in the small town of Turmantas, near the border with Latvia. Built in 1928, this wooden church not only reflects the spirituality of the local people but also bears witness to the region's rich historical heritage.
It should first be noted that this building is highly significant both architecturally and culturally. Although the church was built relatively recently, its simple but elegant architecture is in keeping with the surrounding countryside and the character of the settlement. The church has a rectangular plan, with a distinctive bell turret and a low side sacristy. The churchyard is enclosed by a metal fence, which gives this sacred building extra protection and a sense of intimacy.
Over its history the church has seen more than one change. In 2016, for instance, the whole structure of the church was repainted, in order to preserve the building's beauty and authenticity. In addition, in 1945, almost two decades after the church was built, a parish was established, which further strengthened the building's importance to the community.
Services in this church are held in Lithuanian and in Polish. This reflects not only the historical but also the present-day ethnic and cultural make-up of the region. Belonging to the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary at Smalvos, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Turmantas is closely bound up with the wider religious life of the Diocese of Vilnius.
The contribution of the priest Alfonsas Merkys to the church's history is also worth noting. His grave, beside the church, has become an important place of remembrance visited by many of the faithful.
