About the Church
The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus at Demene is a Roman Catholic church in the village of Demene, in Augšdaugava Municipality, on the southern side of the Daugava close to the border with Belarus. It belongs to the Diocese of Jelgava.
A Catholic place of prayer already existed in this area in the 19th century, but the old wooden church burned down during the First World War. Construction of the present church began in 1932, was interrupted for a long time, and the church was completed and consecrated in 1992.
The church has three wooden altars, the central one dedicated to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The church is the centre of spiritual life for the border community of Demene.
