About the Church
The Church of St John the Baptist at Medumi is a Roman Catholic church in Medumi eldership, in Augšdaugava Municipality, on the southern outskirts of Daugavpils. It belongs to the Diocese of Jelgava.
Before independence, local Catholics used to worship at the church of Smelynė, but once the border between Latvia and Lithuania was closed it was left on the other side of the state border. A new church was therefore built at Medumi in 1933–1935, and its wooden interior fittings were completed in 1937.
The church serves the faithful of the Medumi area and is an important gathering place for the local community.
