About the Church
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Silene stands in Skrudaliena eldership, in Augšdaugava Municipality, close to the tripoint of Latvia, Lithuania and Belarus. It belongs to the Diocese of Jelgava.
The present wooden church was built in 1913 through the efforts and at the expense of the priest Mykolas Skorupskis, to mark the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. An earlier wooden chapel, dedicated to St John the Baptist, had burned down.
It is the largest wooden Catholic church in the Diocese of Jelgava — a church about 24 metres long and 12 metres high. The church holds a distinctive collection of sacred objects and liturgical vestments, which visitors may view.
