About the Church
The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Grīva is a Roman Catholic church standing in the Grīva part of Daugavpils, on the left bank of the Daugava. It belongs to the Diocese of Jelgava and is an architectural monument of national significance.
The red-brick church was built between 1882 and 1889 to a design by the architect Vilhelmas Neimanis; according to tradition, it was raised on the site where the Virgin Mary had appeared to the people. In 1990 a bell tower was built beside the church.
It is a three-aisled building in the Historicist style. The church interior is adorned with three figurative stained-glass windows made in 1889 at the St Luke's workshop in Warsaw, and an organ made in Krustpils in 1890. The church at Grīva remains one of the most important Catholic houses of prayer on the left bank of Daugavpils.
