About the Church
The Church of the Ascension of the Lord at Elerne is a Roman Catholic church in the village of Elerne, in Tabore eldership, Augšdaugava Municipality. It belongs to the Diocese of Jelgava.
It is the oldest masonry church in the Daugavpils area, built in 1650. At first the church served Lutherans, and in the 18th century it passed to the Catholics in exchange for the church at Sīkele.
The church's massing and details reflect the sacred architecture of the Duchy of Courland of that period. This ancient church remains to this day a significant monument to the region's history and faith.
