About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of St Stephen in Tukums is a Gothic Revival shrine of the Diocese of Jelgava in the town of Tukums, west of Riga.
The Catholic community in Tukums began to form as early as the 18th century, at first as a branch of the Lamiņi parish. The present red-brick church was built in 1893–1896 through the efforts of the Lamiņi parish priest Kazimieras Jasenas, and was consecrated on 14 July 1896 in honour of St Stephen. In 1920 the Tukums parish became independent.
The shrine is a red-brick building of Gothic forms with a single tower; its length is about 17 metres, and its width and height are each 10 metres. The church is the centre of the Tukums Deanery and the local Catholic community.
