About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Cross in Vaiņode is in the small town of Vaiņode in south-western Courland, near the border with Lithuania. The church belongs to the Liepāja Diocese and is dedicated to the Holy Cross.
The origins of the Catholic community of Vaiņode go back to the third decade of the 20th century, when the first child was baptised here and a local baron donated a house of prayer to the Catholics. The present church was established in 1941 in a converted former synagogue building – windows unusual for a Catholic church, which survive to this day, recall this building's past.
The church is a plastered-masonry, two-storey building on a square plan. In 2004 it was renovated: the roof and windows were replaced and the facade repainted. The modest Vaiņode church remains an important place of gathering and prayer for the local Catholics.
