About the Church
The Anykščiai Church of St Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist is the tallest church in Lithuania, with towers 79 metres high (before the First World War they were 84 m). It belongs to the Diocese of Panevėžys, is in the Gothic Revival style, and was built in 1909 in Anykščiai.
The church has been built more than once. The first church arose in the second half of the 15th century. During a fire in the town in 1566 the church burned down and was soon rebuilt. It burned down again in 1671 and was rebuilt by 1677. A single-towered masonry church was built in 1757–1768. The present masonry church was built in 1899–1909.
The Anykščiai Church of St Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist has two organs. In 1999 an organ of 45 stops, 3 manuals and 2,600 pipes was installed. The older organ of 6 stops was built in 1934 and was later moved to the altar of St Mary.
In the summer of 2012 a viewing platform was set up in one of the church's towers, from which the surroundings of Anykščiai can be seen from a height of 33 m. Visitors who climb to the top find themselves directly beneath the church's three bells.
The church also holds several important works of art, including a granite bust of A. Baranauskas, Stations of the Cross, a sculpture of the grieving Mary on the grave of J. Uogintas, and a bronze sculpture on the grave of A. Gražys.
