About the Church
The Burbiškis Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a wooden church in the village of Burbiškis, Anykščiai district. It was built in 1955 and its form resembles a dwelling house.
The church's history goes back to 1932, when the priest Pranciškus Zabiela, who had returned from the USA, bought the Burbiškis manor house and fitted out a chapel in it. In 1933 a parish was established and the church was named in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The Soviet authorities closed the church in 1947, and only in 1955 was the new church blessed, and it has been in use ever since. Next to the church stands a wooden bell tower and a statue of Christ about 4 m high, erected in 1943, which has become a symbol of Burbiškis.
