About the Church
The Church of St George in Ambeļi (Roman Catholic) stands in the village of Ambeļi, in the Augšdaugava municipality, Latgale. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
The building originated as a burial chapel dedicated to St George, built by the Plater family at the end of the 18th century. In 1888 the chapel was converted into a church with the addition of a chancel and a porch; an independent parish was established here only after the First World War.
It is a small wooden church with Baroque features, on stone foundations and with a small turret; it holds about 50 people. The most valuable feature of the interior is a Baroque altar from the end of the 18th century with artistic wood carving.
