About the Church
The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus at Dubna stands in the centre of the settlement of Dubna, in the Augšdaugava district, in the Latgale region. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
In 1702–1765 a Jesuit mission, subordinate to the Daugavpils residence, operated in Dubna. A wooden chapel was built around 1800, and in 1804 Bishop S. Sestrencevich granted it ecclesiastical permission; it became an independent church in the late 20th century, after Latvia regained its independence.
It is a rare octagonal, weatherboarded timber building – the only church of such a centralised plan in the former Daugavpils district. Oak altars were installed in 1882, and a bell was acquired in 1933; the church is dedicated to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
