About the Church

The Roman Catholic Church of St John the Baptist in Višķi stands in the Višķi civil parish, in the Daugavpils municipality, in southern Latgale. The church belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona and is dedicated to St John the Baptist.

Construction of the church began in 1908 to a design by the Swedish architect Karl Eduard Strandman, who lived in Liepāja; the work was completed in 1925, and the church was consecrated in 1930. It is a single-tower, cruciform basilica-type church, built of split fieldstone; it is about 30 metres long and 15 metres wide.

In June 1939 lightning struck the church, damaging the roof and interior; President Kārlis Ulmanis granted 4,500 lats towards the repairs. In 2017 the Višķi church was listed among the state-protected cultural monuments and remains an important place of prayer for local Catholics.
